Overview: This service offers fully accessible boat trips on Lough Ree and part of the River Shannon, with a specially adapted vessel capable of accommodating several wheelchair users alongside other passengers. Cruises last about 90 minutes, typically run multiple times a day in peak season and depart from North Quay, Ballyleague.
Accessibility & facilities:
The boat has a roll-on/roll-off design that allows people in wheelchairs to embark/disembark independently without lifts.
Stable spaces with secure tie-downs for wheelchairs are provided on board.
Reception facilities at the quay include accessible toilets. Some reports note a Changing Places facility on site with additional support features, making longer visits more comfortable.
Trips are advertised as suitable for people of different mobility levels, though it’s still wise to discuss individual needs when booking.
Booking & costs: Advance booking by phone or email is advised, especially in summer. Some booked fares (e.g. reduced rates for disabled or unwaged visitors) are available — check directly with the operator for current pricing and assistance details.
What to expect: On the water you’ll see scenic islands, learn local history, and have good opportunities to spot waterfowl and wildlife. Wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring layers — conditions on the lake can vary.
This is a purpose-built accessible boating experience on Lough Ree, not a standard cruise with partial adjustments. The roll-on/roll-off design and secure wheelchair spaces mean the boat itself is the main attraction, rather than an add-on to a typical tour.
You get the islands, wildlife and Shannon views without trails, gravel paths or steep approaches. For travellers managing energy levels or avoiding uneven ground, it’s a straightforward way to experience the landscape.
It works well when one member of a group uses a wheelchair and others don’t. Everyone shares the same experience rather than splitting up for different activities.
The format is predictable, staff-supported and time-defined (around 90 minutes), which makes logistics easier.
Visitors looking for high-adrenaline water sports — this is a relaxed scenic cruise, not an activity session.
Those uncomfortable on open water, particularly in changeable weather.
Travellers without a car relying fully on tight rural public transport connections — timings need planning in advance.
