Accessibility Information

Dog Friendly (assistance dogs only - no pets)

Baby Changing Facilities

Family Friendly - children will love the castle and will be interested in the recent film history here

Trim is a town-centre site. Expect public parking nearby rather than a big on-site car park, especially at peak times.

Practical Information

Trim Castle is an OPW heritage site in Trim town centre. The grounds are open to explore, but access to the keep is via guided tour and can be limited at busy times — arriving early helps.

Opening days & times

Seasonal opening times apply:

  • 5 Feb – 16 Mar: daily 09:00–16:00

  • 17 Mar – 30 Sept: daily 10:00–17:00

  • 1 Oct – 31 Oct: daily 09:00–16:00

  • Nov – Dec: weekends only, 09:00–16:00 (January is also weekends only)

Tickets

  • Castle grounds: free to enter.

  • Guided tour of the keep (weekends): Adult €5, Senior/Group €4, Child/Student €3, Family €13.

  • OPW policy: free entry for visitors with disabilities and an accompanying carer where an admission charge applies (worth confirming at the desk for this specific tour).

How long to allow

  • Grounds only: 30–60 minutes at an easy pace.

  • With keep tour: allow 1.5–2 hours, depending on queueing/availability in peak season (summer access can’t be guaranteed).

Parking

Trim is a town-centre site. Expect public parking nearby rather than a big on-site car park, especially at peak times.

Accessibility & buggies

  • Important: the keep is not accessible for many visitors — there are very steep, narrow stairs, and OPW notes disability access is “very restricted”, with restricted access to the grounds only.

  • Even on the grounds, you’re dealing with historic surfaces; buggies may manage parts of it, but it won’t feel like a smooth park path.

Toilets

Toilets are listed on-site as a facility.

Dogs

Assistance dogs only (no pets).

Food & picnics

No picnics allowed onsite. Plan to eat in town before/after.

What to wear

Wear grippy footwear and dress for whatever the weather’s doing — you’re on exposed stone and open ground, and the keep stairs (if touring) are steep.

Who Should Visit

Trim Castle suits people who want a proper medieval “big keep” experience, with history delivered in a guided format rather than just reading plaques. It’s a strong match for:

History heads & castle-nerds

The largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland is a bit of a headline in itself, and the guided tour makes the layout and the power politics far easier to follow.

Families with older kids/teens

If your crowd can handle rules, heights, and lots of stairs, the keep tour gives that “we’re actually inside it” feeling that ruins don’t always manage.

Low-faff day-trippers

The grounds are easy to slot into a day around Trim (and nearby Boyne Valley sites), and you can keep it short if you’re tight on time.

Film-location curiosity

If you’re into famous filming locations and big stone silhouettes, it’s an easy win — even if you only do the exterior.

Who might skip it

  • Wheelchair users / anyone who can’t do steep stairs: OPW is blunt — the keep isn’t accessible, and overall access is “very restricted”, with grounds-only likely.

  • People who hate queues or uncertainty: in summer, access can’t be guaranteed and delays happen.

  • Dog owners on a day out: it’s assistance dogs only, so it’s not one to combine with a casual dog walk.
